Dear Mr. Editor,
Here at Utmost United Methodist Church, we have one of those little nagging annoyances. It is like when you have a rock in your shoe, with both hands full. It is a little pain, but you can’t put down your load to take care of it without a whole lot of inconvenience, and possibly leaving off something very important.
The little nagging annoyance is our Prayer list. We ask for names of people who need or want prayer, we want all who will to notify the church, we remind people from the pulpit, bulletin, newsletter and website. The problem is some names remain on for what seems an interminable time.
Tom Tedium calls the church office from time to time asking why we don’t trim the list. “It takes up space that is needed,” he said. “No one reads all those names anyway.” Shirley Goodness, who manages the list, said, “We cannot just take a name off because it has been there a long time. Some people’s needs are not met by an instant prayer spurt,” she said, “like shooting spot remover on a shirt! After all, we are a church. We are not selling space for ads.”

35 years ago in the May 3, 1973 issue of the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, in the “North Georgia Women’s News” section, Sally Askew wrote an article entitled, “What Is a School of Christian Mission?” Included in the article was her attempt at an answer.
For four years I have served as a member of the School of Christian Mission Committee. For eight summers (1973 will be the ninth) I have spent the better part of a week as a participant in such a school. Yet I’m not sure I can define what a School of Christian Mission is. It is a time for intense study and concentration in the mission study themes for the next year a time for renewed friendships with those we only see at “The School,” a time for new and updated information on our organization and specific officer responsibilities, a time for spiritual renewal, a time for talking and sharing with others from all over our conference – all this and much more.
It is the hope of the school committee that the school will “expand concepts of mission,” develop a supportive community, and help participants to “know god and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.” (Purpose of United Methodist Women from the Consitution)
